Affiliate Marketing – Some New Considerations with Affiliate Marketing in The New High Touch World

When we get started in Internet Marketing it is usually centered around building a list and affiliate marketing is often an integral part of that because we really want to get new subscribers into our sales funnel but we don’t have our own product yet.  Typically we are giving away a free report with affiliate links in it, and a One Time Offer that starts out as an affiliate offer until we create a product of our own.  The products most people target are products from clickbank, or JVZoo for example when we talk about internet marketing and information products.  With niche markets we often talk about physical affiliate products with places like Amazon, Google, Commission Junction or Linkshare and today for the purpose of this post, I’m going to be talking about Internet Marketing Products as an example.

One of the first things you want to think about when getting started with affiliate marketing is your reputation! You are going to be recommending products to other people. If you recommend crap then people are not going to come back and visit your other suggestions.

You really need to choose your products wisely. Take the time to research the products and the reputation behind the supplier. A subscriber of mine recently brought to my attention that a product I was promoting might not be as good as it used to be.  I’m not going to mention the name of the product, but that isn’t a good thing to hear from one of your subscribers.  The question is, when someone writes to you and tells you this how would you react?  I started by writing her a note back to find out what happened, and why she felt this way.  Then I decided to follow up on it and do my own due diligence on the product.  You see I have always recommended products that I use or have used personally and if you do that regularly you can’t go wrong.  The reasons for that are 1.)  you own and feel good about the product. 2.)  you can write a better recommendation, answer questions about it 3.)  You’re probably passionate about it.  Now in the new high touch world of customer service our buyers expect more and they may actually need more help than they did previously wanting ready made solutions.  Zig Ziglar used to say that you can’t sell your product effectively until you have used it yourself.

This got me thinking about a couple different things.  First, I’m only going to recommend the absolute best products I can find as an affiliate and be extremely picky about who I affiliate with.  Second, I’m going to look at affiliate programs where there is continuity or lifetime affiliate payouts (frequently seen with affiliate programs on Nanacast or Infusionsoft) and finally when my product is ready I’m going to look to implement the things I value in other affiliate programs like lifetime affiliate strategies.

The basics steps that you are going to go through include:

  • Setting up your own website – not required but recommended for best results
  • Choosing affiliate companies to promote
  • Choosing a niche
  • Narrowing down your selection of products
  • Promoting your products
  • Using keywords to promote your product
  • Writing product reviews
  • Driving traffic to your site
  • Creating a subscriber list
  • Getting Paid

Final Thoughts

When writing content for your affiliate marketing site, blog or emails always keep the following in mind:

You are writing to form a relationship with your reader. By creating trust they will gladly purchase from you time and time again!

The best way to achieve this is to write in a friendly manner as though you are talking to a friend. Be honest about the product you are reviewing. If there is a negative get it out in the open and tell your readers about it. Always strive to provided added value everywhere and anywhere you can.
